Hymn of Kamehameha I by Kalakaua Sheet Music

"Hawai'i Pono'ī" was the national song of the Kingdom of Hawai'i. King Kalakaua compoased the text in 1874 and Royal Hawaiian Bandmaster Henry Berger set it to music.

This fascimile of the earliest publication (San Francisco, 1874) has the original title, "Hymn of Kamehameha I." It was initially performed at Kawaiahao church on November 16, 1874, the anniversary of King Kalakaua's first birthday following his accession to the Throne. It was proclaimed the national anthem in 1876.

Although not officially recognized, it continued to be regarded as the anthem of the Territory and the State of Hawai'i. In 1967 it was declared the official State anthem by an act of the State Legislature.

The original sheet music, featured here, is from the Paul Kahn Collection, Hawai'i State Archives.
