Educating with Aloha: Reflections from the Heart on Teaching and Learning

Jan Iwase

Softcover, 176 pp.

How do we change the way teach- ers teach and children learn? In Educating with Aloha: Reflections from the Heart on Teaching and Learning, Jan Iwase offers insight and a path to creating caring school communities. Packed with succinct advice and thought-provoking anecdotes, Educating with Aloha is Iwase’s follow-up to Leading with Aloha: From the Pineapple Fields to the Principal’s Office, her 2019 book that laid the groundwork

teachers and involved parents. A longtime Hawaii public school teacher and principal, she envi- sions a system of learning in which teachers and students alike develop a passion for education.

Jan Iwase grew up in a pineapple plantation village on the island
of Oahu and graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In 2002, after teaching in the Head Start program and in the State De- partment of Education (DOE), she was named principal of Hale Kula
Elementary School, later renamed the Daniel K. Inouye Elementary School. She was chosen as the DOE’s Central District Elementary Principal of the Year in 2013 and was nominated for the Masayu-ki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership award in 2016. She is now retired, after 45 years as an educator.
