Volume Three in the Palapala'āina Series relates how the Hawaiian Government Survey mapped the lands and charted the waters of the Kingdom of Hawai'i during the 1870s. The Kingdom Government faced a challenge in obtaining consistent surveying, in turn, land records were chaotic. Uncertainty over boundaries and land ownership was a major issue. Under the direction of young William DeWitt Alexander the Hawaiian Government Survey began an ambitious undertaking for the period.
